Suspected land mine leads to Royal Navy intervention on Isle of Wight beach (photo gallery)

A couple from Australia had more excitement on the last day of their holiday on the Isle of Wight than they bargained for last week.

There was great activity down at Grange Chine last Thursday, after the discovery of a suspected land mine resulted in Royal Navy Bomb Disposal Unit travelling over on the ferry to undertake a controlled explosion.

Margaret from Twilight Wight Photography was with two others, Nick and Heather Smith from Australia who were visiting family, when they discovered the suspected land mine.

The Coastguard were called and subsequently the Royal Navy Bomb Disposal Unit made their way over the Solent.

Six hours later
The suspected ordnance was discovered at 2pm and the group were asked to remain on the beach to show the Coastguard its location.

Margaret told OnTheWight that by the evening a small crowd had gathered, mainly those staying at Grange Farm Caravan and Camping site, all standing at a safe distance whilst the Royal Navy Bomb Disposal Unit undertook a controlled explosion at 8pm.
