Ryde School Senior Mathematics Team won the 2016 South East Regional Final of the UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT) and Further Mathematics Support Programme (FMSP) Senior Team Maths Challenge last week.

Competing against other schools, Ryde’s Maths Team, including Island pupils Wilf Armfield, Daniel Wood and Jajeevan Sriskandarajah and one of our International Boarders, Jessie Gong, beat the competition to take first place and qualified for the National Final taking place in London on 7th February 2017.

Ryde School’s number of entries in the UKMT Maths Challenges has increased again this year with 42 pupils gaining Senior Maths Challenge certificates (four Gold, 18 Silver and 20 Bronze) and pupils as young as 14 years of age competing in the Senior Challenge.

Impressive results
Two Year 10 pupils achieved impressive results for their age: Lucy Holloway – Silver certificate and Mary Lillington – Bronze.

Two pupils qualified for the BMO1(the UKMT follow-up round to the Senior Maths Challenge): Wilf Armfield, who joined Ryde School for the Sixth Form on a top Scholarship, solved all the mathematical problems put before him and scored 125 out of 125, and Daniel Wood, a fellow Scholar gained an impressive 108 marks.

To have scored full marks is rare.

In addition, two students qualified for the Senior Kangaroo: Hannah Perkins and Jajeevan Sriskandarajah.

Distinctions for girls
Finally, three Sixth Form students (Hannah Perkins, Stella Lee and Jessie Gong) took part in the UKMT Maths Olympiad for Girls for the first time and all three girls achieved Distinctions.

Headmaster Mark Waldron said,

“I hope the news of academic success in Maths for the Isle of Wight students does not go unnoticed by Ofsted following those unhelpful comments in the summer.

“With 67% A*/A grades in Maths GCSE this year and at a time when the level of Maths achievements in schools is under scrutiny, Ryde School mathematicians are going from strength to strength and we are looking forward to the National Final in 2017.”
