Readers will remember the amazing story of young Islander Natasha (Tasha) Lambert who last year sailed around the Isle of Wight single-handedly.
You might think that is an admirable challenge, but not necessarily difficult, until you hear that Tasha, now 16 years old, has Athetoid Cerebral Palsy and was only able to sail the yacht controlling everything by mouth using a single straw through a ‘Sip & Puff’ system.
It was a pretty spectacular feat and the videos and media coverage Tasha received afterwards showed us all what a truly inspirational teenager she is.
Bigger challenges
In three weeks time (on 1st July), Tasha will be back on the water, this time aiming to sail across the English Channel from France to England.
Once again, Tasha will be raising money for charity, this time choosing RNLI, Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust and Wet Wheels.
She says,
“I love sailing and I love to be able to help people (its such a fab feeling as people usually help me). The Charities that mean a lot to me and I want to help are:
The RNLI as they saved a friend of mine who was involved in a sailing accident a couple of years ago, and they are fantastic in keeping us all safe on the water.
The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust as I see them out on the water all the time helping other young people who had cancer get a new focus on life just like me through sailing.
Also Wetwheels Solent a project taking people with disabilities powerboating. Wetwheels supported me last year when I sailed around IOW and took out some friends of mine who use wheelchairs. I am fundraising for Wetwheels though their Website and off line.
