The Crown Inn, the pub next to the mini roundabout in Shorwell with the stream in the garden, has appeared on the Assets of Community Value, which is maintained by the Isle of Wight Council.
What does it mean?
Being on the list means that restrictions are placed on the property.
If the owner of the property listed wishes to sell the property and a qualifying community group wants to buy it, they can trigger a pause on the sale for six months while they attempt to raise the money to buy it.
The owner doesn’t have to sell it to them. The nomination for The Crown Inn as an Asset of Community Value was made on 7th July 2022 and the listing lasts for five years.
New landlords
After being closed earlier in the year, the pub reopened in the summer with new landlords, Simon Cant and Liam White.
They also run the New Inn, Shalfleet, The Castle Inn, Newport and The Vine Inn, St Helens.
Judging by their social media posts, the pub has received a great deal of support from locals and has had a very busy summer.
How does being listed affect a sale?
As the property was recently for sale we thought we’d find out what difference it being listed as an Asset of Community Value would have made.
An Isle of Wight council spokesperson told News OnTheWight,
“The legislation means that any disposal once listed would need to follow the Assets of Community Value process irrespective of whether a marketing exercise had started or not.”
