Quay Arts proudly host The European Arts Company & Rhondda Cynon Theatre’s ‘The Pickwick Papers’ in the Anthony Minghella Theatre, at Quay Arts at the end of the month.
This Dickens’ 19th Century novel lends itself to their style of physical storytelling and has plenty of opportunities for high comedy.
The play follows the eccentric journey of Samuel Pickwick as he travels around the country in 1827, attempting to use his massive brain to ‘observe human nature’ for the greater good of mankind.
Accompanied by his friend, the hapless Nathaniel Winkle, and his cockney manservant, Sam Weller, Pickwick runs into a multitude of colourful personalities along the way.
The play has been adapted by the company and is performed by an amazingly versatile cast of 6 actors familiar from stage and screen.
Expect duelling, elopement, bribery, fisticuffs, mistaken identity, near drowning, and finally, imprisonment for debt!
Follow the haphazard and often farcical journey of Pickwick and a host of well-loved characters including Sam Weller, Mr. Jingle, Nathaniel Winkle, Mrs. Bardell and The Fat Boy on their weird and wonderful ‘perambulations, perils, travels and adventures’ throughout the country.
Quay Arts are offering a special discount to all students to encourage them to exploit this rare opportunity to enjoy a truly sensational interpretation of Charles Dickens’ work who is a prescribed author on the national curriculum for GCSE and A Level English – this is doubtless the Original Road Trip!
The audience can expect to see:
# Period costumes
# Dickensian language
# Fast paced and energetic action
# Theatrical invention and Imagination
# Brilliant acting and superb comic timing
Charles Dickens is probably the most loved English writer and has a very loyal following. He also has several connections with The Isle of Wight. For example, he stayed at Winterbourne House in Bonchurch in 1849 where he wrote ‘David Copperfield’ so had a real affinity for the Island.
‘The Pickwick Papers’ is a glorious romp and a title most people recognise and find appealing. Following the hugely successful tour of ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’, European Arts Company is fast gaining a reputation as the premier exponents of quality drama that is inventive, highly physical and painfully funny! And this latest production is no different.
This is the perfect opportunity to enjoy Dickens as you’ve never seen it before! This is an electrifying, and timely, adaptation of Dickens’ classic work.
