Third attempt at building five townhouses on former Zanies nightclub site

Plans have once again been put forward to build houses on the footprint of a former Isle of Wight nightclub.

Proposals to build five townhouses on land which once homed Zanies, on Sandown Esplanade, were first submitted in 2017. Permission was granted, but it was not acted on, so expired.

New plans were put to the Isle of Wight Council last August, again asking for approval for the same scheme, but were withdrawn in May this year.

No reason for the withdrawal has been given publicly.

New plans for same style of townhouses
Now, plans which the council has said are revised, have been submitted for a third time by applicants, J and P Moorman.

They are for five of the same style of townhouses, again each with three bedrooms.

Zanies, near Sandown Pier, used to be popular among revellers, but it has since been demolished, due to the building’s derelict condition.

It closed nearly 30 years ago.

Gap has had a negative impact on the street scene
In planning documents submitted to the authority, Andrew White Planning Consultancy says the hole along Sandown Esplanade where Zanies used to be has had a negative impact on the street scene but the modern townhouses would enhance it.

Other housing schemes were approved for the site in 2003 and 2006 as well, but apart from tearing down the club, no other work has started.

The public consultation runs until 11th September.
