Earlier in the week a Which? survey was widely reported in the media concerning councils around the UK.
Using Freedom of Information requests, Which? had found that 55 councils had been adding surcharging when the public were using credit cards, and in some cases debit cards, to make payments to the councils for services.
Some councils – Bath and North East Somerset were given as examples – were charging up to 3% on top for council tax payments, planning applications and many other services.
We got in touch with the Isle of Wight council and asked them if they did such a thing. A simple response was returned – No.
