Tim Wakeley Stands As Liberal Democrat Candidate In Binstead & Fishbourne By-Election

Liberal Democrat candidate, Tim Wakeley will be standing in the Binstead & Fishbourne By-election on 23rd June 2011. Ed

Tim WakeleyOn June the 23rd there will be a By-election in Binstead and Fishbourne and with the help of local residents, opposition to the damaging cuts to front line public services that meet the needs of the elderly, the young and the most vulnerable in our community can be strengthened.

Tim pledges to resist cuts to front line public services and demonstrate that there are viable alternatives to this wholesale destruction.

Currently Tim is actively fighting two campaigns:

  1. Through the IOW Association of Local Councils, Tim is seeking to mitigate the damage being done to the Island Youth Service by the IOW Council by establishing a dialogue between Town and Parish Councils and the IOW Council who so far have ignored nearly everyone, including most young people and the Police.
  2. Tim is also trying to ‘broker’ a deal between the IOW Council and the Ryde Town Council whereby the public conveniences in Binstead (closed by the Conservative IOW Council) may be re-opened (there is now a moratorium on any further action on this issue until after the election).

Help to build a stronger Island
Additional to campaigning Tim also works hard to help build a stronger Island.

With a real concern for the future economy Tim helped to bring a senior government Minister to the Island to talk face to face with local transport and renewable energy industries. The meeting was very successful in that direct links were forged between the government Minister and Island business.

It is through this wider work that effective and experienced Councillors can help the Island economy, building on businesses already here and developing links with government departments.

Tim was very pleased to have played a leading role in the successful campaign to get the IOW Council to reverse its decision to close the ‘outstanding’ Binstead Primary School. Happily the school now flourishes and teaches his grandson.

It is the quality of the individual that represents Binstead in County Hall that will make the difference, not their political affiliations. In this respect the best qualified individual is Tim Wakeley who has the range and diversity of experience in both local government and commercial sectors together with a deep belief in social justice demonstrated over many years of working for the community.

Tim is married to Maria and has two adult daughters and two grandsons.

Born in Ryde and raised in Binstead Tim attended Binstead Primary School and Ryde Secondary Modern before going on to the ‘Technical College’ in Newport as part of his apprenticeship in making surgical appliances.

It’s a real pity that there is not going to be one candidate only against the Tories, as a clear message to the leadership of the Isle of Wight Council that their policies are lacking a mandate. Unfortunately all that will happen is that opposition will be split and the Tories may slip in despite the horror of what they’ve done to the Island, particularly over the… Read more »

There is only one candidate against the Tories-the Labour one. The Liberal Democratss are the Tories’ coalition partners helping steer though savage cuts to services under their hated leader Nick Clegg; Independents can’t always be relied upon to oppose Tory policies; and UKIP are only really interested in the EU.

I’m inclined to agree. Labour is only tainted by having been in office for 13 years, doing nothing to modernise Britain’s electoral system when it had the chance to, but it did at least move Scotland and Wales forward through devolution. The lesson seems to be that parties are prepared to show ‘boldness’ in the early months and years in office but quickly row back on early… Read more »

Robbo you really dont get it This isnt a national election its a local election which should have no party politics in it What is required is the best local person who will listen to the local people Tories, Labour, and Lib Dems all follow party lines, and do as they are told The Independent will vote for what is best for Binstead even though it could… Read more »

You make very good sense Gordon – Pity islanders do not share your view as they should. Forget Westminster vote for the person who will do things for your community, not just their pockets. So that rules out the Tory and Lib/Dems. because the latter are only a lighter shade of blue. My vote would go to Labour – Just look at the calibre of Geoff Lumley,… Read more »

Sadly the Lib Dems have shot themselves in the foot by supporting Tory policies in Government. Especially the policies of savage cuts to public services and social care, creeping privatisation of the NHS, unemployment etc.

You can not say you will be fighting the cuts, when you are in a party that is in coalition with the Tory’s that is doing the cutting. But you are a nice bloke.

The big problem here is that the LibDems are tainted and, despite what anyone thinks about local elections, the stark fact is that most of the electorate have just given the LibDems a good kicking because of their, mostly unqualified, support for the Tories nationally. They have absolutely no credibiity left. The Independent candidate seems to be a Tory in disguise so the only alternative is Mick… Read more »

Stewart where do you get the idea that the Independent standing at Binstead is a tory in disguise He has been approached by the Torys and offered all sorts to join them same from the Lib Dems To his credit he has rejected their offers a true and honest Independent All the other candidates belong to political parties and vote as they are told including your labour… Read more »

Gordon, Indpendent or not, he would be more accurately described as an ‘Independent Tory’, rather like Patrick Joyce, and I don’t think County Hall would be too disappointed if he beat the Official Tory candidate; not a lot separates them. If you’re a Tory it’s the ‘ideology’ that counts. Mick Lyons is an excellent candidate and deserves to do well – it just depends whether the good… Read more »

The Lib Dems chose 15 minutes of fame instead of sticking to their principles and providing a real alternative choice. They pressed the self destruct button when they entered a coalition. The price they will pay forever is a lifetime of anonymity. Very sad, and a salutory lesson to anyone not to sacrifice their principles when they cant achieve results with their own policies.
