Ryde Flooding

Transport groups welcome return of Island Line Train service

In their own words. Ed

The Isle of Wight Bus & Rail User’ Group (IOW BRUG) and Railfuture Wessex have congratulated The Network Rail / South West Trains Alliance for completing substantial repairs to the Isle of Wight railway infrastructure damaged by torrential rain in December that enabled trains to start carrying passengers again on Sunday 19th January ahead of the original forecast dates.

Working through difficult conditions
Stuart George, Chairman of the IOW BRUG stated his group was delighted with the prompt action taken by infrastructure contractors supported by the skilled and dedicated Island Line workforce who worked through difficult weather conditions to drain the flooded Ryde tunnel and undertake work at around 20 other sites.

Charles Burns, Acting Secretary for Rail Campaign group Railfuture Wessex said it was good for passengers to have trains serving Ryde Pier Head again. Whilst the rail services were suspended it was not easy to find the taxis which linked with the replacement coach service to Shanklin.

Lack of communication
Charles said,

“It appeared the operators were not talking to each resulting in a bad experience to those who were customers of both Island Line and Wightlink.”

Both spokesmen agreed that a positive outcome of what appeared to be a bad start to 2014 is the recent works will have hopefully addressed a number of known weaknesses with the Island Line infrastructure.

Would the other shortlisted candidates really be able to raise funding for any development with the “in perpetuity” clause included? I doubt it very much indeed.

Did you know?: It’s the 75th Anniversary of the very 1st concert at the Winter Gardens today.
‘Bright Times’ concert party was held on 17th August 1936.

Yes, and if you’d like a bit more history then take a look at the recent Town Council report on Winter Gardens management from 1994 to 2010.

It’s better than a soap opera and quite shocking IMO.

The Council can afford 4 million pounds to tart up County Hall although tell us they’re unable to fund or find the money to invest in the Winter Gardens and many other local services.

In my opinion this is sheer hypocrisy and a slap in the face to Island people.

The winter gardens is a theatre. The council should be in the business of providing public service, not running theatres. What they SHOULD have done is to maintain the building since that was their responsibility, but they didnt, and no-one can change that. The goal now is to attract private investment to maintain a building. County Hall, like it or not, is essential to the running of… Read more »

Isnt the money being spent on County Hall to equip it for all Council Staff so it can sell off all its other buildings hence realising both the Capital Receipts and reducing year on year spend on Buildings Manitenance? I don’t think someone woke up one morning and had to decide whether to “tart up” County Hall or the Winter Gardens and decided on County Hall. Not… Read more »
