A petition has been launched on the Government Website and calls for "a maximum cap" on Isle of Wight ferry fares. It has six months to reach 100,000 signatures and be considered for debate in Parliament.
A pilot scheme will be introduced this year, with additional sailings during the summer at weekends to coincide with school holidays, festivals and events such as the Old Gaffers Festival in Yarmouth.
The new Wightlink ferry will have space for more than 1,000 people on board and will use hybrid battery technology, as well as conventional fuel, to reduce emissions and make the vessel quieter.
