Following last week’s decision by the Isle of Wight Cabinet to vote in favour of proposals to cancel the Student Rider, a rally has been called for later today.
Council Leader, David Pugh, told the Cabinet last week that the subsidy for the Student Rider cannot be sustained by the council and would therefore be abolished this September. The Student Rider is a scheme that allows those in education to travel on Southern Vectis buses for £1.20 fare.
Two rallies have been arranged for later today.
The first, starting at 4.30pm, has been organised by young people on the Island outraged by the council’s decision.
The event was called through Facebook and already has 156 people confirmed as attending and 301 maybe attending.
The second rally has been called the the ‘Save Our Services’ Facebook group and starts at 5.30pm and is opposing various cuts, closures, jobs losses and price hikes at the council.
Both rallies take place outside County Hall.
