As the holiday season comes to an end, the number of unemployed claimants on the Isle of Wight has risen sharply.
According to the Office for National Statistics, the number of unemployed claimants on the Island rose to 2,829 in August 2011.
This is a hike of of 172 since June, when showed 2,657 unemployed claimants.
This represents a rate of 3.9% of the economically active population aged 16 to 64 in the UK.
The graph below shows the pattern of the rise and dips over the last few years in unemployed claimants, with a large rise in March 2009 compared to March 2006.
The levels of unemployed claimants has remained as high, or higher, over the following winters.
