There is still time to book your free tickets to a talk and tour this Sunday by Isle of Wight artists, Teresa Grimaldi and Sarah Vardy, to find out more about their project, OLIVIA.
The installation at Ventnor Fringe Festival about the life of Olivia Parkes — ‘Britannia – The old lady of the sea’ — was so popular that it moved to the Jenny Clayden Gallery at Quay Arts.
Screening, talk and tour
Sunday’s event (from 2pm to 4pm) begins with a short film screening and talk from exhibiting artists Teresa Grimaldi and Sarah Vardy in the Anthony Minghella Theatre.
It’s followed by a tour of the OLIVIA exhibition.
Animated vignettes and oral history
The work re-tells the extraordinary life of Miss Parkes, who lived in Ventnor for almost 40 years in a dilapidated boathouse on stilts.
Using animated micro ‘vignettes’ within a replica wooden model boathouse, it is accompanied by audio recordings of Ventnorians who remember her.
How unconventional people are treated within society
Olivia’s life raises many questions about how unconventional people are treated within society.
The scene captures the details of her daily existence, intriguingly opening a window on the spirit of a woman who dared to live differently.
Photography exhibition
A photographic exhibition by Samuel French can be seen in the Quay Arts Cafe. The photographs capture the OLIVIA project during its showing at Ventnor Fringe Festival, as well as images he’s created inspired by her story.
This is a chance to see the exhibitions and hear an in depth discussion about the works before the exhibitions end on 7th October.
