The Vacated Works: Teresa Grimaldi

We’re big fans of Ventnor artist, Teresa Grimaldi’s work and excited about her forthcoming exhibition taking place at Quay Arts in Newport next month.

The Vacated Works: Teresa Grimaldi“Do you remember the good old days before the ghost town?” (The Specials 1983 – reached no 1 in the charts).

The Vacated Works describes Teresa Grimaldi’s most recent works, created away from her home place of the Isle of Wight during the past three years.

The Vacated Works embrace forms of video, installation, puppets and painting in a shared sense of absence.

The artist has engaged here with a narrative of nostalgia and the uncanny, or ‘unhomely’ using the puppet as emblem.

Evolving exhibition
The exhibition will experience changes throughout its duration and Teresa will be present each Saturday from 10am-12pm and 2pm-5pm to perform and make the work more ‘homely’.

La Banane Reborn
Included in the exhibition will be the documentation and traces of a sited recreation of “La Banane” (the Banana)- the now vacated cliff top ice cream kiosk that Teresa and her sister ran as children in the 1980’s.

The Vacated Works: Teresa GrimaldiThe recreation will happen for one day only over the May Bank Holiday on the original site (more to come on this later in the week).

Working closely with themes around the exhibition Teresa has been working with students at St George’s School.

Their work will be exhibited and demonstrated around Quay Arts as part of The Vacated Works.
