The subject this month is Art and the Garden Setting. A lecture by Dr Twigs Way.
From the famous still lives of the Dutch 16th and 17th century, to the pre-Raphaelite ‘medieval’ garden, and the Victorian genre painting this talk will analyse the role that gardens and plants have to play in furthering the viewers understanding of the ‘story’ of a painting. Amongst our themes will be power and status, lust and love, sickness and death, we will trace the ways in which the backdrop of a garden, the inclusion of a flower, or just the drop of a petal, fills the painting with meaning all too often missed by the modern gallery visitor.
Twigs Way is a professional garden historian, author, freelance lecturer and researcher. Twigs lectures on garden history, gives talks to private groups, including NADFAS, and is also available to lead garden tours.
The talk takes place on 21 November. Doors open at 7.15pm. Tea, coffee and bar are available before the lectures which begin at 8pm.
We ask you to be seated by 7.55pm. Lectures finish at approximately 9.15-9-30pm.
Guests are welcome at a cost of £7 and £2 for students.
