Vectis Radio, the Newport-based community radio station has been granted a five-year extension on its broadcasting licence by the regulatory body Ofcom.
The station, which started life in 2010 as an Internet-only broadcaster, was granted its five-year FM licence starting in November 2017.
That licence has now been renewed by Ofcom for another five years enabling Vectis Radio to continue broadcasting on FM 104.6 and supporting local businesses, community and charity organisations.
Mac: Going to build on those successes
Station manager Ian Mac said,
“This is fantastic news. In the last five years, we have not only continued broadcasting through the pandemic, but gained some national awards as well as the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.
“We are going to build on those successes in the next five years and now we can plan for the future with renewed confidence and look forward to expanding our management team with some additional directors.”
Currie: Overjoyed that we can continue broadcasting
Fellow director Kelvin Currie said,
“I am overjoyed that we can continue broadcasting and supporting our local community, not only with our broadcasting but by helping youngsters through our 4Ps Training School charity.
“Giving young people a chance to broadcast on live FM radio gives them a big incentive to work on their communication and confidence skills. Without Vectis Radio being on FM, that incentive would be diminished.”
Peacey-Wilcox: This licence extension is well deserved
Leader of the Isle of Wight Council, Cllr Lora Peacey-Wilcox said,
“I am truly delighted that Vectis Radio can continue to broadcast for another five years. This licence extension is well deserved and I am always amazed by not only the breadth of music on offer, but how well the station supports the Island.
“Marvellous news, well done to all concerned.”
