Vectis Radio, the Newport-based Community Radio Station has been nominated for nine awards in seven categories for this year’s National Community Radio Awards to be held in Bedford on 19th November.
The awards recognise all the great work that Community Radio Stations do in their local communities, entertaining, informing, and engaging listeners.
All this hard work is being done by minimal staff and quite often lots of volunteers.
Steers: Another great year for Community Radio
Martin Steers, Awards Chair, said,
“It’s been another great year for Community Radio across the UK, and as ever it’s been a big challenge for our judges from across the industry as the quality of entries are better than ever, a real testament to all that Community Radio stations do in their areas.”
Vectis Radio has been nominated in the following categories:
- Community Development Project of the Year for the 4Ps Radio Training School for Young people and for the 4Ps Radio Training School for Adults with Learning Difficulties.
- Community Show of the Year for the Short Breaks show. This show is sponsored by the Isle of Wight Council.
- Volunteer of the Year with two nominations for Ron Leleux & Maggie Currie.
- Sage Person (Over 60) for Kelvin Currie.
- Innovation Award for the 4Ps Radio Training School for Young people. Covid and Community Rebuild for ”Think On Our Feet.”
- And the overall award for Station Of The year.
Mac: We punch well above our weight
Station Manager and Director of Vectis Radio, Ian Mac, said,
“This year’s nominations have blown me away. We did well in 2021 and to get so many nominations for a national award shows how well regarded we are by our peers in the radio industry.
“For a station of our size, with only around 30 volunteers, we punch well above our weight.”
Mac: Good luck to all the nominees
He added,
“I hope this will draw attention to the major success of the 4Ps Radio Training School and we can secure some very much needed funds so that we can continue in 2023.
“I’m really looking forward to the 19th November. Good luck to all the nominees.”
Currie: A recognition of the hard work of all our volunteers and supporters
Fellow director Kelvin Currie said,
“It’s an honour to be nominated again as Sage of the year, and I am delighted that Vectis Radio overall has picked up nine nominations.
“It is a recognition of the hard work of all our volunteers and of course a huge thank you to our supporters.”
Marriott: Such worthy nominations
The Isle of Wight High Sheriff, Kay Marriott added,
“It is great news that Vectis Radio have been nominated for nine awards in the national Community Radio Awards, including a nomination in the Station of the year category.
“Such worthy nominations for a radio station that serves our Island community. I wish Vectis Radio good luck and am excited to hear the results on 19th November.”

Isle of Wight councillor, Paul Brading, Patron of The 4 The 4Ps Training Radio Training School said,
