Ventnor Botanic Garden (VBG) is in the process of starting a new horticultural apprenticeship scheme for Islanders, to study under VBG Curator Chris Kidd and Head Gardener Wayne Williams.
Past apprentices have gone on to study at Kew Gardens and pursue careers in horticulture around the world. At a time when plant extinction rates are accelerating, the world needs more horticulturists, not less.
Mentorship
Kew-trained Chris Kidd has shaped the garden over the last 20 years and has extensive Botanical Garden and horticultural experience both in the UK and overseas.
Wayne Williams has recently moved from Birmingham where he was Head Gardener of The Birmingham Botanical Gardens and had worked there for over 20 years.
An interest in climate change
They would like to hear from horticultural enthusiasts with a particular interest in climate change who think an apprenticeship could be right for them.
Local community allotment programme
VBG is also currently building plans for a local community allotment programme for families called Growing Spaces and increasing the school and home-education offering to the IOW community.
