A plan to demolish a former Isle of Wight bus depot, paving the way for a ‘comprehensive redevelopment scheme’, has won support from local councillors.
Turner Property submitted plans for a demolition of Ventnor Coach Station at 22 Pier Street in Ventnor town centre, including site clearance and erecting a new two-metre-high painted plywood hoarding.
Redevelopment to follow
The applicant’s agent, Andrew White Planning Consultancy, told County Hall Turner Property intends to bring forward a ‘comprehensive redevelopment scheme’ for the site in due course.
“Removal will be beneficial”
A Planning and Heritage Statement said,
“The bus depot makes no positive contribution to the conservation area’s character or appearance; on the contrary, its removal will be beneficial.
“The proposed hoarding is designed to enclose the cleared site in an attractive manner during the interim period, representing an improvement on the current situation.”
Town council’s asbestos caveat
A spokesperson for Ventnor Town Council (VTC) said,
“VTC supports this application, however, with the caveat that a full asbestos survey should be completed as per instructions from the Isle of Wight Council and safe removal thereof.”
Roof material condition unknown
Mark Wootton, senior environmental health practitioner at the Isle of Wight Council, previously said the condition of material on the roof is not known.
The officer said he is minded to consider that the following condition should be applied to any consent,
“Prior to demolition a full refurbishment and demolition survey to identify any Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs) shall be carried out.
“The survey shall be submitted to the local planning authority and all ACMs shall then be removed by a licensed asbestos removal contractor or otherwise in accordance with good practice.”
Decision due by 1st September
The Isle of Wight Council’s public consultation on proposal 26/00815/RDEMCA finished on 7th August and a decision is due by 1st September 2026.
