VENTNOR MAINTAIN WINNING START
Ventnor eased to a second successive Southern Electric Premier League victory after a comfortable six wicket win over Bournemouth II at Newclose on Saturday.
Roger Miller continued his impressive start to the season with a three wicket blast which saw the visitors slip from 60 without loss to 71-4. David Beven (3-20) then made further inroads to help dismiss the Dorset side for 146.
Ventnor were given a decent start by Adam Hose (21) and Cole McConchie who made an excellent 54, but suffered a mid innings wobble when Martin Blackman and Ian Hilsum fell cheaply and the runs dried up. However, an unbroken fifth wicket partnership of 54 between Miller (27) and Neil Westhorpe (17) guided their side home with six overs to spare.
Ventnor travel to Hartley Wintney on Saturday.
CLARKE TOP SCORES IN OPENING VICTORY
Ventnor’s second team began their Hampshire League division 2 campaign with a victory over Southampton Community at Steephill.
The promising Billy Clarke, 16, continued his fine start to the season with a splendid 71, a knock which underpinned the home team’s total of 225-9 from their 45 overs.
The visitors’ response was held back by Hugh Calloway who took 2-29 on his competitive debut, but they recovered to reach 174-7 before the rains came with seven overs remaining. Ventnor’s superior run rate was enough to win the game for Mark Woodhouse’s side.
Hythe and Dibden are the visitors to Steephill on Saturday.
OPENING ROUND EXIT IN NATIONAL COMPETITION
Ventnor were defeated by 56 runs by Ealing in Sunday’s ECB National Cup 1st round match.
The home side, who reached the final last year, totalled 272 -8 (Fallis 80) to leave Ventnor with a daunting target to chase.
Teenagers Henry Bartlett with a fine 58 and Adam Hose (32) gave the visitors an excellent start with a opening partnership of 77 and although James Cheek (28), Ian Hilsum (29) and Hugh Calloway (20) made useful contributions, the innings eventually closed on 216-8.
