SEVEN WICKET WIN LEADS VENTNOR TO THE TOP
Ventnor turned the tables on Portsmouth to record a comprehensive seven wicket victory in their Southern Electric Premier League clash at Newclose on Saturday.
This latest win, their sixth in seven outings. was enough to take Ian Hilsum’s side to the top of division two and put behind them the disappointment of the previous weekend’s Twenty20 defeat at the hands of the city club.
In the absence of Roger Miller, Charlie Freeston and Mark Holmes through injury, Adam Hose was given the new ball and made an immediate impression, taking 3-42 as the visitors struggled to 85-5.
Tom Sambrook (50) led a recovery before being dismissed by Andy Whyte, after which the innings subsided to 184 all out from only 42 overs, Henry Bartlett finishing with 3-29.
Ventnor were given a terrific start in pursuit of their target with teenage opening pair Hose and Bartlett adding 70 for the first wicket before the latter departed for 16. Hose completed an excellent afternoon’s work with 10 fours and a six in a fine knock of 74 before Cole McConchie (25) Hilsum (18 not out) and Neil Westhorpe (28 not out) guided their side home with thirteen overs to spare.
The side travel to New Milton on Saturday.
WEAKENED SECOND TEAM DEFEATED AT BURRIDGE
Ventnor’s second team were left cursing the lure of the Festival after a below strength side slipped to a 53 run defeat at Burridge II on Saturday.
The home team rattled up a formidable total of 258-2 with Nick Park (86) and returning first teamer Paul Ancell (73) doing the damage.
The Islanders gave themselves a sniff of victory as they reached 161-3 with 14 overs remaining but the departure of Martin Blackman for 60 and Phil Baldwin (33) signalled the end of their hopes as the last seven wickets fell for 44 runs.
Mark Woodhouse’s fourth placed side will look to get back to winning ways when they entertain Portsmouth II at Steephill on Saturday.
