Ventnor defeated Cowes in the final of the Isle of Wight Cricket Board’s Outdoor Sixes competition last Sunday.
Chasing the Cowes total of 63-3, Sean Nowak with 24 not out, and Martin Blackman (17 not out) led their side to a convincing win to retain the John Hilson Memorial Trophy.
The Ventnor team, skippered by David Beven, who took a hat-trick in an earlier round, easily defeated Northwood in the semi final, James Cheek (23 not out) and Sean Nowak (12 not out) overhauling the modest target of 36.
At Steephill on Saturday, tourists Bagshot were hammered by 146 runs.
Mark Whyte’s fine knock of 103, his first century for a number of years, helped Ventnor to 264-8, backed up by 42 from Mark Fletcher, 33 from Martin Blackman and 40 from Charlie Freeston. The Surrey side could manage only 118 in reply, with 11 year old Ross Whyte, son of the day’s centurian, taking 1-12.
Will Wesson Memorial Match
A match to perpetuate the memory of Will Wesson, the much missed former Ventnor player, who died in February 2008, was held at Steephill on Sunday. The two sides, comprising players who played with Will on the Island and mainland, met to compete for the Will Wesson Memorial Trophy. The visitors, captained by Ed, Will’s brother, batted first and totalled 185-8 with the skipper top scoring with 72.
The home team, who lost the inaugural match last year, came out on top this time around, winning by eight wickets with Mark Whyte completing an excellent weekend with an unbeaten 78. Nick Holland with 52 and Steve Attrill (40 not out) were the other run getters as Ventnor won with five overs to spare.
Mary Wesson, Will’s widow, presented the trophy to winning captain Steve Clutterbuck.
