Ventnor Film Society starts its Spring Season on Tuesday 3rd and Wednesday 4th February with an exciting programme of British and World Cinema.
The Society continues to meet in Ventnor Arts Club, and due to increased demand, we are now screening each film on two nights.
Award-winning films
We have put together another season of recent award-winning films from the UK, Germany, Belgium, USA, Turkey, Poland, Philippines and Russia.
This season, our programme has a good mix of drama, black comedy, thrillers and coming of age stories, in English and in the original languages with subtitles.
Our opening film is the critically acclaimed, Two Days, One Night, starring Marion Cotillard as a factory worker threatened with dismissal, who has one weekend to persuade her colleagues to support her instead of taking a bonus.
We are also pleased to be showing the acclaimed Polish drama Ida, in which a novice sets out to learn the truth about the murder of her Jewish parents during the Nazi occupation, before taking holy orders. A bleak, frozen winter landscape is evocatively filmed in black and white.
British directors
We have two films by British directors; Exhibition tells the story of a middle-aged couple preparing to leave the beautiful, modernist home they have shared for many years.
Metro Manila, a tense crime drama set in the Phillipines, follows the fortunes of a rice farmer who seeks a better life for his family in the city, only to find himself in a dangerous and corrupt world.
Barbara is set in Cold War Eastern Germany, where a doctor finds herself torn between her loyalty to her patients and a chance for love and freedom if she can escape to the West.
Filmed over 12 years
One of the most exciting releases in 2014 was Boyhood, which was filmed over 12 years, showing snapshots of family life as a young boy, Mason, literally grows up on screen before our eyes, a unique and beautiful experience.
Tipped for success at this year’s awards, Winter Sleep is set in a small hotel in the mountains of Turkey’s Cappadocia. When the snow falls and the tourists leave, tensions amongst the villagers awaken.
Final film of the season
Our final film of the season is the Russian black comedy Leviathan, which sees Kolya battling to keep his home and land against lawless, vodka-soaked gangsters, corrupt politicians and powerful priests. This is a long film so we will be starting at 7pm.

Where, when and how much
Ventnor Film Society meets in the Ventnor Arts Club, High Street, Ventnor, which offers comfortable seating and HD projection. In order to be sure of a place, please reserve a seat by emailing [email protected] or local viewers can always take a chance and turn up on the night.
Screenings take place on alternate Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 7.30pm and latecomers are not admitted.
Entrance is £6 payable at the door and is not necessary to be a member of the Arts Club to attend. Doors open at 6.30pm.
People tend to meet up in the bar before the film and some stay on afterwards to chat.
