On Tuesday 2nd and Wednesday 3rd February, Ventnor Film Society returns with a new season of acclaimed British and International Cinema.
The Society continues to meet in Ventnor Arts Club, and, will once more be screening each film on two evenings. Everyone is welcome; there is no membership and there is no need to be a member of the Arts Club to attend.
Award-winning films
This season will see an interesting programme of recent award-winning films from the UK, Estonia, France, Germany, Italy, Iran and USA. We’ve put together a mixture of thrillers, drama, horror and comedy, in English and in the original languages with subtitles.
Starting the season is the British drama 45 Years, for which Charlotte Rampling has been nominated for her first Oscar. A retired couple are preparing to celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary when a shocking letter arrives for the husband (Tom Courtenay), revealing that the body of his first love has been found frozen in an Alpine glacier. As the anniversary party nears, it may be that the marriage will not last that long.
Anti-war comedy
From Estonia comes Tangerines, an anti-war comedy set in war-torn Georgia, where an elderly farmer tending his tangerine crops finds himself having to accommodate two wounded soldiers who vow to kill each other, until his kindness begins to heal their enmity.
When Iranian director Jafar Panahi was banned from making films, he responded by driving around Tehran in a taxi rigged with hidden cameras. In Taxi Tehran, his passengers talk of life in the city and share what is on their minds, letting us into the reality of Iranian society.
Saskia Rosendahl stars in Lore, a German drama set at the end of World War Two. Abandoned by her Nazi parents, Lore must lead her four young siblings on a harrowing journey through the desolate countryside, receiving help from an unexpected quarter along the way.
Return of Omar Sy
Our audience loved Omar Sy in The Intouchables, and he returns to our screen with Samba, an optimistic French comedy drama about the unlikely bond between an immigrant and his volunteer social worker.
Crimson Peak is a gorgeous, Gothic, romantic horror story starring Mia Wasilkowska as an American heiress swept away by a seductive stranger (Tom Hiddleston) to his remote, haunted mansion. Our final film will be Black Souls, a tragic story of honour and vengeance in a mafia family of Southern Italy.
Where and when
Ventnor Film Society meets in the Ventnor Arts Club, 13 High Street, Ventnor, which offers comfy chairs and HD projection.
To be sure of a place, please reserve a seat by emailing [email protected], but local viewers can always take a chance and turn up on the night. Screenings take place fortnightly on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 7.30pm.
Entrance is £6 payable at the door and the bar is open from 6.30pm. We look forward to welcoming new faces as well as old friends to our Spring Season.
