Ventnor Film Society unveils eclectic Autumn Season lineup

Ventnor Film Society returns for our Autumn Season on Tuesday 8th October with another programme of recent, award-winning films from around the world.

Our films will be shown on Tuesdays, with screenings at both 2.30pm and 7.30pm. We are also pleased to say that we will again be charging £6 for tickets.

Membership not required
We welcome everyone to come along; there is no need to be a member of the Ventnor Arts Club to come to our films and we always enjoy seeing new faces.

The bar will be open for drinks, teas and coffees and Wendy, the Arts Club manager, will be selling ice-creams for a little treat in the afternoon.

Something for everyone
This season, we have chosen films set in Laos, Germany, Senegal, France, Japan and Italy, shown in the original languages with subtitles.

We hope there will be something for everyone, with adventure, animated fantasy, an exposé of the migrant trade, a tense thriller, a charming coming-of-age story, and a journey through the afterlife.

Samsara: 8th October 2024
The season opens with Samsara, a unique, meditative, cinematic experience. We embark on a spiritual journey through the cycle of birth, death and reincarnation, first amongst the Buddhist monks of Laos, and then in a village in Zanzibar.

The Teachers’ Lounge: 22nd October 2024
Our next film is The Teachers’ Lounge, a tense German thriller. When a young teacher defends a boy accused of theft, she implicates a staff member, causing outrage amongst the school community.

Caught in the middle, she tries to mediate but finds herself near to breaking point.

Io Capitano: 5th November 2024
The greed, brutality and corruption of the migrant trade is exposed in Io Capitano, as two Senegalese teenagers head for Italy.

But between them and their dream of a future as music stars, lie dangerous checkpoints, the Sahara Desert and the treacherous waters of the Mediterranean.

Ama Gloria: 19th November 2024
Our next film, Ama Gloria, has captured the hearts of audiences at film festivals this year. Six-year-old Chloe adores her nanny Gloria, and is devastated when Gloria must return home to her family in Cape Verde.

The two spend one last summer together on the island in this moving coming-of-age story.

The Boy and the Heron: 26th November 2024
From Japan comes The Boy and the Heron, a beautiful, hand-drawn animation from Studio Ghibli’s veteran director Hayao Miyazaki. Young Mohito struggles to adjust to a new life on his father’s country estate.

However, he meets a talking heron, who leads him to an abandoned tower and into a world of fantasy inhabited by parakeets, pelicans and cuddly spirit creatures.

La Chimera: 3rd December 2024
Our last selection, La Chimera, is an adventure comedy set in Tuscany, where English archaeologist Arthur joins his wayward band of grave robbers in search the find of their lives.

But Arthur still dreams of the woman he lost and sets out on a magical, romantic quest for the mythical gateway to the afterlife.
