Ventnor Fringe Festival 2023: Unusual spaces, extraordinary performances, and a celebration of The Arts

Ventnor Fringe Festival is back. Returning from 21st to 30th July and today (Friday) the first shows in by far the largest and most exciting programme to date go on sale.

Early highlights to be announced include the acclaimed Barely Methodical Troupe’s International award winning smash hit BROMANCE, five star circus about camaraderie and affection. Audacious, touching, exhilarating tour-de-force of physical heroics where handshakes become handstands and backslaps become backflips. It looks set to take The Big Top, a new venue introduced last year, by storm.

A Day At The Fringe
Following last year’s sell out event local promoters EarsPeeled return with A Day At The Fringe, a whole day music takeover headlined by Coventry based Alt/Indie band FEET, alongside the likes of Dublin’s Fizzy Orange, Bristol’s Grandmas House, London’s Freddy Merkky, and an array of Island talent.

Gengahr

Other musical offerings announced include international psych explorers Flamingods who combine Eastern and African influences, purveyors of some of this year’s most catchy earworms, Gengahr and BC Camplight, moniker of maverick songsmith Brian Christinzio.

Feet

The Philadelphian is considered one of indie music’s most forward-thinking artists with a discography which acts as a soundtrack to a life rife with bad fortune, mental illness, running afoul of the law, and ultimately absolute redemption.

Family fun
Families will be pleased to see the return of two time Audience Choice Award Nominees Let’s Circus to the boutique Magpie Tent with a brand new show Happy Daze.

Peter Pan

Also returning is award-winning Japanese duo Witty Look, whose on-stage characters jump right out of the world of manga and cartoons. Meanwhile The Handlebards turn their hands to JM Barrie’s Peter Pan in a special three-hander adaptation with their signature comedic style.

Cabaret and drag
For fans of cabaret, breakout star of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK Season 2, Ginny Lemon explores the intersections of their working class identity, queerness, disability but with a distinct acidic wit, aesthetic and unique perspective on life have made them one of the UK’s most celebrated drag and performance artists in Pick ‘n’ Mix.

Comedy
Much of the comedy offering is yet to be announced but two time Edinburgh Comedy Award Nominee Ahir Shah (Live at the Apollo, The Mash Report, BBC 2) returns to curate and host The Pick of The Fringe, a selection of some the best comics from across the festival and always an early event to sell out.

Stay tuned
With around 150 shows expected to take part, new additions to the programme will be added regularly to the Website and audience members looking for advice or recommendations can also visit the festival box office at Ventnor Exchange (open 7 days a week from 10am) or by calling (01983) 716767.

“Keep”? Come off it Bob, all you’ve ever done is jump when the party whips told you to!

Rubbish Tim. Stop spouting rhetoric and start looking for facts. Bob has raised the profile of our island at Westminster, took Boris to Venture Quays to show him the great workmanship and aid his push for retention of their industry, secured funds for the repair of Ryde rail pier, for investment in the network and for replacement rolling stock. Etc. how much of that do you think… Read more »

He hasn’t fixed the ferries though, on the contrary he has declined to refer their conduct to the Competitions & Markets Authority!

He has a fair point. This is the UKs biggest constituency and it should be a showcase, not a basket case. The island is run chaotically, it’s not exactly an exemplar of good governance and he doesn’t actually champion or deliver much other than a lot of careful words. Most of his lobbying is pushing against open doors. He’s had years to start impressing us but really,… Read more »

‘Keep delivering for the island’? Bob, you’ve actually delivered diddly for the island to date, you were re elected purely because the island voted heavily for Brexit, and the Conservatives were the only party prepared to honour that democratic mandate, no other reason. The next General Election will be completely different, and on your present performance you’ll be out on your ear, so I would get too… Read more »

Congratulations on being re-elected as our Island MP Bob.

In the spirit of delivering for the island, and the PMs commitment to deliver for our NHS, please would you have a chat with your friend Boris Johnson and ask him to write off the deficit our Island hospital is currently struggling under, so it can restart with a clean slate.

Thank you in advance.

If Seely really is interested in the Island he will announce his total opposition to UCOG’s proposed drilling on our beautiful Island and apply pressure to the Island’s Tory council to deny planning permission to the frackers for this environmental outrage. Given Seely’s voting record on environmental matters I am extremely sceptical that this will happen. Drilling and fracking will bring untold traffic, pollution and the risk… Read more »

Well on the basis Bob Seely objected to the proposed 10,000 new houses on the island, but supports a fewer number, I guess he’ll support drilling a few little holes on the island, providing they are not too deep.

“More money for the NHS”….where is it please?
As yet unseen on the shop floor.
Supposedly ‘ring-fenced’ for I.T. and building work.
Waiting lists continue to grow, still very short staffed and only 200 beds for a population of 140,000.
One hospital bed per every 700 residents.

Stop the extraction of oil and gas. This is not about community, or investment. This is purely about greedy landowners and UKOG filling their pockets with dirty money at the expense of others.
