There will be three lantern making workshops before the parade on 21 December, but these will only happen if people do come and make lanterns, so please take part.
There are three options to make a lantern – as usual, you can make a lantern in one session (about 2-3 hours in total for 1 lantern) or spread it over two sessions and make the frame in the first session and cover and decorate it in the next.
* Saturday 8th December at The Winter Gardens from 10am – 4pm as part of Ventnor Fun Day (more detail to come on this)
* Saturday 15th December at The Youth Centre on Victoria Street from 3pm – 6pm
* Sunday 16th December at The Youth Centre from 12pm – 4pm
The cost is £3 per lantern and there is this year the option to buy a battery powered unit at a small extra cost instead of using a candle.
This is obviously safer to use and also brighter, so may be useful if you want to use your lantern inside at home during the Christmas period or if it is to be carried by a child.
All these workshops are open to all adults on their own or with their children – no unaccompanied children please.
There are also a couple of extra masterclass workshops being held at The East Dene Centre in Bonchurch to make one or two larger lanterns – remember the giant reindeer from last year!
You need some experience for these but you don’t need to be an expert and is for older teenagers and adults only – no charge for these. These take place over two evenings from week beginning 10th December.
The Arts Unit is funding one workshop from the Neighbourhood Learning in Ventnor project but otherwise there is no funding this year.
The workshop leaders and organisers will be giving up many hours of their own time to make the lantern procession a successful community event in Ventnor. Please either support it by making a lantern and taking part or coming to watch the procession on the 21st December. It starts from the Market Street car park by the Youth Club at 6.15pm and is due to finish at the park by 7pm for the Carols in the Park.
More information from Alison on 07976 009414 but you don’t need to book onto the workshops – just come along on the day.
