Thanks to Hannah for news from St Catherine’s. Well done to everyone who took part in the Grand Draw. Ed
Saturday 13th October saw the finale event of the Grand Draw, raising funds to support St Catherine’s children and young people with speech, language and communication needs and charities chosen by Ventnor Rotary.
The sea-themed evening, held at Newclose Cricket Ground, marked the finale of the Grand Draw, which was launched by the High Sheriff, Nick Hayward, in April. Six of the seven prizes – including holidays in France, hotel stays in London and Winchester and tickets to Bestival 2013 – were won by Island residents. Visit St Catherine’s website for details.
The evening began with a wonderful performance of sea shanties from a group of St Catherine’s students, accompanied by music teacher, Jenny Burke. This was followed by an entertaining ice-breaker activity led by Derek Babbington, a former Governor of St Catherine’s, during which he shared his knowledge of Tall Ships and engaged guests in a tissue paper rope-making game of strength! A round of Heads & Tails followed, with the winner receiving a television donated by npower.
After a seafood supper, local classical vocalist, Charlotte Callaghan, dazzled the audience with her maritime themed songs. An auction preceded the Grand Draw itself.
Rachel Thomson, Head of Business and Charity of St Catherine’s said, “The Grand Draw has been a tremendous success, raising over £5,000. Many thanks are due to everyone who bought a ticket – and sincere congratulations to the lucky winners.”
Lucy DeVille, President of Ventnor Rotary, commented, “We would like to extend our very grateful thanks to all the shops, pubs, restaurants, businesses, individuals and the staff of the Island Spar Stores who worked so hard to sell tickets on our behalf. The money raised will enable Ventnor Rotary Club to respond to the many applications for funding we receive from local groups.”
St Catherine’s and Ventnor Rotary would like to thank all of the Grand Draw supporters, including Newclose Cricket Ground, The Royal Hotel, Coutts, Rouen Collines Rotary Club, Brown’s Hotel – London, Hotel Du Vin – Winchester, Rob da Bank and the Bestival team, Boden, the Whittle family and npower.
