Ventnor to nominate more buildings as Assets of Community Value

Many thanks to Evelyn for this report from Monday’s Ventnor Town Council meeting. Ed

Salisbury Gardens (Coastal Centre) is top of the list for discussion these days with everyone waiting to see how plans develop. The final decision will be made at the Isle of Wight council’s cabinet meeting on 7th January 2014, when their Forward Plan is discussed.

Cllr Jim Toogood has led on completing the specification and invitations to tender goes out this week to Island based contractors. The Financial regulations for contract procedure are set out on the Ventnor Town Council Website.

Nominations for Asset of Community Value
In the light of the Isle of Wight council’s acceptance of the Coastal Centre as an Asset of Community Value, it was agreed unanimously that Ventnor Town Council would submit further nominations as follows: St Boniface School, the Youth Club and the Library.

They agreed also to prepare and submit the Children’s Centre and Springhill Gardens.

Community bus
Through the swift action of the Town Council and Stuart George of the Isle of Wight Bus Users, the 31 bus route has been able to continue carrying local people to and from places that Southern Vectis buses are unable to reach.

Popular driver Ken has had to have hospital treatment and it has been very difficult to replace him. This has now been resolved, with a replacement bus and drivers, and we hope people will take advantage of this excellent service. Timetables are on the Boots’ site.

Further reports available on the Town Council Website include

  • Beach Safety
  • Paddling Pool
  • Fulfilling Lives
  • Town Clerk’s report that updates recent activities

Trinkets to bedazzle the electorate they let down with their election promises. But nothing is for free all the Island’s Council Tax payers will be putting the bill of these short term sweeteners due to for-fitting income.

Sounds like an excellent way to ensure that buildings which have a use are not sold by the IOW council.

However, the buildings must have a use, and must be at risk of being sold. The library is still run by the IOW council isnt it? Why would the VTC want or need to take this on?

Trinkets to bedazzle the electorate? Ridiculous paranoia.

Just for clarity: The Community Right to Bid only comes into operation if/when a building is proposed to be sold. VTC has neither interest nor intent to take on the Library while it has security in its site and provides the excellent range of services for which demand continues to grow. In fact a nomination implies no commitment whatever that the nominating body either wants to or… Read more »

I tried it and putting ‘Community Rights’ into the search area of the Councils web site returned pages and pages of everything containing either ‘Community’ or ‘Rights’ A garbled mess really

Thanks David, that link got me there. Strange that my comment reflecting my struggle to reach the relevant information should attract 6 negative marks isn’t it?

It would take only one person who cared enough to focus on it, Bystander, to knock up the red arrows. (Ways and means, ways and means…) Lovely colour though.

What I find is curious is that the acclaimed Children’s Centre praised by Hampshire and run by professionals is being considered to be run by VTC …children’s lives are at stake here ? Remember how well the winter gdns were run? The long list of possible take overs smacks of running before one can walk. Why did we waste money going to a unitary … South Wight… Read more »

It isabsolutely not the case that the Children’s Centre isbeing considered to be run by VTC!! All VTC has done is to nominate the building as an Asset of Community Value under the Localism Act. What that means is that if the nomination is accepted by the Isle of Wight Council the building will be listed by them as an Asset of Community Value. Then if in… Read more »
