There was a small gathering at Ventnor’s War Memorial this morning (Thursday) as former Royal Navy serviceman, William Nixon, led a non-denominational service in memory of those who have lost their lives in war.
Today’s service was a little different to what you’d usually expect: A balance of old and new.
Featuring a reading of My Boy Jack by Rudyard Kipling, William also performed The Last Post and the National Anthem on his silver cornet and paid tribute to those who gave their lives in previous wars around the World.
Informative, while respectful
He also gave a history of the formation of the Royal British Legion, as well as the 80th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbour and the involvement of the Americans in World World Two.
William’s sister, Hanna, sang Keep the Home Fires Burning and I’ll Be Seeing You, which were both performed so beautifully that she brought tears to the eyes of many attending.
Wreath laying
Situated on Park Avenue, the War Memorial will play host to the laying of wreaths on Sunday at 3pm (following a service at St Catherine’s Church at 2pm).
Hear Hanna sing again
Hanna is performing tonight (Thursday), Friday and Saturday at 7.30pm at Bembridge Village Hall, as well as at 2.30pm on Sunday.
She’s part of the Bembridge Little Theatre Club’s mega musical, Nunsense,
Nunsense the Musical follows five nuns who are in a hurry to bury several of their recently deceased sisters. To raise funds for the burials, they put on a variety show their community, and shenanigans ensue!
Tickets are £10 each and can be purchased at Welcome Stores in Lane End, Bembridge or Splash in Union Street, Ryde.
