Town Clerk John Highland and the town tourism consultant met with community members at the Blue Crab last evening to present a long-term tourism development plan for Yarmouth.

Clerk Highland announced that the plan is based on benchmarking Yarmouth against other successful tourist destinations in Great Britain and concluded that Yarmouth has many natural seaside advantages to attract tourists and could be developed in a similar fashion to Blackpool.

A perfect vision for Yarmouth
Judging by the many rounds of table-tapping with beverage glasses during the presentation community members in attendance were pleased that the plan was visionary and offered long term development for Yarmouth.

Upon final review however the general consensus was that developing attractions such as Illuminations, thrill rides and a landmark tower is cost prohibitive at this time and that a scaled-down plan should be considered.

Marjorie Michaels, 67 of 10 Bettsworth Crescent suggested that “Plans are plans and fine by themselves. Truth be told, all we can afford as things are, is to change the name of Yarmouth to Blackpool.”

“Blackpool receives over ten million visitors a year, if we can attract even a small amount of them to Yarmouth by mistake or otherwise, it would go a long ways to bettering our shopkeepers and those who provide accommodations.”

Let’s get our skates on
Discussion that followed moderated by clerk Highland concluded that the modified plan should be implemented as proposed.

While many acknowledged that some tourists may be disgruntled initially upon arrival everyone agreed that once visitors landed in Blackpool, formerly called Yarmouth, they would more that likely fall in love with the natural beauty of the island and be glad that they did not make it to their intended destination as planned.
