Views sought on discretionary housing payment policy

The Isle of Wight Council is undertaking a consultation on its Discretionary Housing Payment (DHP) policy.

Feedback received during the consultation period will help to finalise the policy which will come into force is to be formalised and will come into force during the current financial year.

In some circumstances, people in receipt of housing benefit find themselves in a situation where the benefit they receive does not cover the amount of rent they are due to pay.

Extra support for short-term shortfalls
The policy provides extra support to cover these shortfalls on a short-term basis where a claim is made for additional financial support and the applicant is receiving at least the minimum amount of housing benefit. It does not cover shortfalls in the amount of council tax due to be paid.

The policy is being developed to give a consistent and fair approach to providing additional assistance for the most vulnerable Island residents in genuine hardship.
