Volunteers To Replace Wightbus Drivers Over Nine Routes (updated)

VB readers may remember back at the end of March the council released news of a new deal between themselves and Southern Vectis.

As part of the new agreement, we were told that Wightbus local bus services would be replaced with buses provided by Southern Vectis, but driven by voluntary drivers.

“Big Society in action”
The council aimed to save £280,000 by ceasing the Wightbus services as part of their budget approved in February this year.

Last night, the BBC reported that the council would be providing a grant of £150,000 to cover the costs of training the drivers, medicals, CRB checks etc., with Cllr Edward Giles hailing the project as “Big Society in action”.

The grant would enable 60 volunteer drivers to operate nine routes across the Island.

We got in touch Unison representative for the Island, Mark Chiverton who told VB, “I’ve been in discussion with the council over the transfer of all staff, but this is the first time I’ve heard about it. I am very concerned and will be investigating further.”

Update 11.57am: We contacted Southern Vectis asking which routes would going to be run by volunteers. They informed us of that those they are training for and will operate with their vehicles are …

  • Havenstreet and Wootton circular
  • Sandown Circular (inc Lake Morrissons)
  • Gurnard / Northwood / Cowes circular
  • Route 6 infill to hourly (via St Lawrence / Undercliff Drive)

With a 101 one reservations, this is surely better than loosing these routes altogether. However, my one main reservation would be this should only ever be a short-term idea. You can’t run a service like this forever with volunteers playing such a crucial role. When things pick up economically, will normal service be resumed?

Take away the grant and they will only be saving £130.000 which is less than Benyon’s salary. The Council said they have £800.000 surplus, so why are they breaking up a friendly bus service that has benefited many Island residents, especially the elderly for such a paltry amount. A White Bus driver told me, this Tory Council have been trying to get rid of the White Bus… Read more »

If Southern Vectis drivers were in the RMT, Bob Crow’s union, they would strike at the very suggestion of this idea :) At least we now see how Cameron, Pugh and the Tories plan to transform public services into one big DIY project. Buses, libraries, TIC’s. Why didn’t they let us clean the public loos, or take our own rubbish up the tip? They’ll be asking us… Read more »

From what I was told a majortity of Southern Vectis drivers ARE in the RMT and a few are in the GMB.
Oh and there are some loos that ARE being cleaned by volunteers isn’t there? Wasn’t it in CP?

so i take it, by volunteer, they don’t get paid. Why would any one do something and not get paid. Unless they are too old to do proper paid work, in which case, do we really want them driving a bus around our roads.

“Why would any one do something and not get paid”

Obviously it’s passed you by, but lots of people do things for each other and don’t expect payment. Some people just like to help out and help others.

This grant will enable the volunteers to start, but what happens in the future, where will the money for the CRB checks, staff training etc come from then? They will also need medicals and insurance annually and money will be needed for this. We can’t run society on a volunteer basis. People need to earn to pay for the necessities of life, they do not need to… Read more »

The Council have stated that they are giving a grant of £150.000, what they have not said that all volunteers must pay for their own medical (in excess of £100) then claim it back

And I suppose any profit from fares will go towards good causes, I mean, they wouldn’t get people to drive buses for free AND profit from it, surely?

Oh wait, it’s Southern Vectis.

Getting volunteers to drive buses is just the thin end of the wedge. Be interesting to see how SV drivers will negotiate a decent wage rise after a couple of years of this! I wonder how the insurance will work? I thought only employees were covered to drive the buses.

Seems that Bob Crow of the RMT thinks the same according to the CP! http://www.iwcp.co.uk/news/news/union-boss-slates-community-bus-scheme-40551.aspx

If it’s true that Councillor Giles appeared on TV to announce this, before talking to the drivers and unions, it’s a big mistake. Possibly even illegal? But we’ve got used to that from this lot.

is it legal for someone in full time employment one day to have to walk away the next day and be replaced with a volunteer, do workers no longer have rights,

Sounds like a classic case of unfair dismissal – hope the drivers are union members…

Most of them are but to be frank for what good it is, they may as well put their subs in a high interest building society account… at least that way they will get more interest than they get from the union!

What a load of…o.k people get to keep the bus service but what a insult to the wightbus drivers what were doing the job.Mind you perhaps Mr Pugh could lead by example and do his job for free now that would save some money.

How inspirational! A group of people willing to forego any payment to help their community by driving buses for free. What a fine example to follow! How about Isle of Wight Council members foregoing their up-to-£32,000-a-year taxpayer-funded wages to help out? Or how about highly-profitable Go Ahead bus company (owners of Southern Vectis)foregoing the six-figure sum of taxpayer subsidy they’ll rake in for the “volunteer” bus scheme?… Read more »

When Boy Wonder was asked about how the community bus scheme would work, he replied,

“The wheels on the bus go round and round, round and round, round and round. The wheels on the bus go round and round, all day long”.

Is there any truth in the rumour that Pugh has decided to resign as a councillor and do something useful for the island by becoming a volunteer bus driver. At least he would receive some training to do the job, currently it is obvious that he has no idea what being a councillor involves.
