Shore Hill - damage in road

Water-damaged Ventnor road reopens to traffic

Shore Hill, known locally as the Cascades, has re-opened following damage to the highway caused by torrential rain this morning (2nd August).

The damage was caused by the local drainage infrastructure becoming overwhelmed by this morning’s exceptional rainfall when 32mm of rain was recorded as falling within just two hours.

Initial repairs to the lower section of the road
Following assessments at Shore Hill – which are ongoing – the road was closed to traffic. We have carried out initial repairs to the lower section of the road and Shore Hill was reopened at approximately 5:30pm – under traffic signals to allow access to and from the Esplanade.

We envisage these temporary traffic lights to be in place this evening although further closures may be required in the coming days to allow further investigations and repair work to be carried out.

Working with partners
We continue to work closely with our partners at Southern Water and the IW Council and will provide an update again tomorrow morning.

Today has been an exceptionally busy time with nearly 100 calls about flooding received by our call centre by 11am. As of now, no other roads are closed due to flooding.

The council and Island Roads are monitoring the weather forecasts and liaising with other Island agencies to ensure that appropriate arrangements are in place should the repairs works become more protracted or the situation deteriorates.
