Independent Arts is pleased to announce news of a significant recent award of funding from Paul Hamlyn Foundation to run its innovative arts and science project: Wavelength.
What is Wavelength?
The project which previously ran from 2020-2023, and was delivered to children from year three to year seven in six Island primary schools, two secondary schools and a pupil referral unit, has received new funding to be run in eight further primary schools throughout 2027 and 2028.

How the project will run
and delivered by creative health charity Independent Arts, the project will be run as termly artist residencies with Island artists across multiple disciplines taking part. The Wavelength programme is an innovative approach to learning through the arts that has raised a great deal of interest from Island teaching professionals.

School reaction
The Head of Curriculum at an Island Primary School, said,
“We are looking to involve ourselves in projects that help to build cultural capital, whilst at the same time, creating aspirations and opening minds to new possibilities.
“The artistic element of your project could help children to express their emotions as well as improving mental health.
“The core curriculum science links will help to bring the curriculum to life for many of our children, especially those with additional needs.”
The residencies will begin in January 2027 and as well as providing opportunities for artists will include partnerships with sector and heritage organisations too.

Funder’s response
The project is generously funded by Paul Hamlyn Foundation. Catherine Sutton, Head of Programme – Education, Paul Hamlyn Foundation, said,
“We are delighted to support Independent Arts to partner with local schools on the Isle of Wight through the Wavelength programme. Wavelength inspires children to learn about science through the arts.
“The programme opens up new opportunities to help children engage in education and overcome barriers to learning – in ways that boost their wellbeing and confidence.
“By working closely with local primary schools, Wavelength will help teachers use arts-based approaches and creative wellbeing practice, creating a lasting legacy of learning for children and school communities alike.”
