The Conservative Candidate for Newport West in May’s Isle of Wight Council elections, Chris Whitehouse, has confirmed that his consultancy business is backing the UKSA Cowes-based Gipsy Moth IV with a second year’s sponsorship for its 2013 tour.
Gipsy Moth IV, which is famous for setting a series of records when Sir Francis Chichester circumnavigated the globe in the vessel in 1967, was restored by the Cowes-based UK Sailing Academy in 2005. The vessel was bought by business partners Eileen Skinner and Rob Thompson in 2010 and is now owned by a charitable trust, which was created to preserve its history, promote charitable activity and raise funds for its upkeep
Second year of sponsorship
Through his business, Chris Whitehouse has been a sponsor of Gipsy Moth IV since early last year when it delivered communications services to help promote the vessel’s summer tour and raise the profile of the trust.
As part of the ongoing sponsorship package, Whitehouse will also focus on the Gipsy Moth IV’s summer itinerary for this year, which will include participation in the Round the Island Race on 1 June (a two-day charter opportunity with a practice day on Friday 30 May) and Panerai British Classic Week. Additionally, Whitehouse will continue to develop Gipsy Moth IV’s fundraising activities and help in securing private charters, the income of which contributes to the vessel’s maintenance and running costs.

Chris Whitehouse said: “We are extremely lucky to have this iconic boat based here so that youngsters from the Island can visit and sail her. I will be liaising with the five schools based in my ward of Newport West to make sure that local students have the chance to see Gipsy Moth IV in full sail this coming summer.
“It is crucial that Gipsy Moth IV’s legacy is preserved and that it is made available and accessible to the public and future generations. I am delighted to be able to continue supporting the vessel’s summer itinerary and the work of the Gipsy Moth Trust. This will inspire young people, promote charitable activities and secure vital funding for the vessel’s upkeep.”
