Wildheart Animal Sanctuary hosts fundraising evening for rescued brown bears Benji and Balu

The Wildheart Animal Sanctuary invites supporters, wildlife lovers, and the local community to a special fundraising evening celebrating (Friday 28th November 2025) six months since the arrival of its beloved brown bear brothers, Benji and Balu.

Since their dramatic rescue from Azerbaijan, Benji and Balu have captured hearts across the Isle of Wight and the south coast.

Hear their remarkable story first-hand
Now, visitors have the chance to hear their remarkable story first-hand from CEO Lawrence Bates and Animal Manager Marc Fox, who will share the incredible journey that brought the bears to their forever home.

During this exclusive evening at Medina Theatre, guests will discover why the Sanctuary made the life-changing decision to rescue brown bears, how Benji and Balu were found, and the extraordinary effort that went into bringing them safely to the UK.

The untold story behind the cameras
From the harsh reality of ‘restaurant bears’ once kept in cages for human entertainment, to the behind-the-scenes challenges of preparing the bears for their eight-hour flight to Glasgow – the event promises an honest and heartfelt account of an unforgettable rescue mission.

As many will remember from their feature on the BBC’s The One Show in August, this is the untold story behind the cameras: the emotional first meeting, the difficult decisions, and the tireless work that turned a dream of compassion into reality.

Bates: Benji and Balu represent a brighter future for animals everywhere
Lawrence Bates, CEO of The Wildheart Animal Sanctuary, said,

“This event is about more than just two bears.

“It’s about hope, change, and what we can achieve when we stand up against animal exploitation.

“Benji and Balu represent a brighter future for animals everywhere.”

Guests will have the opportunity to learn more about the Sanctuary’s ongoing work to provide safe, natural environments for rescued animals – and how public support makes this vital mission possible.
