A Hampshire Constabulary spokesman said:
“We were called to a report of a road traffic collision shortly after 4pm on Thursday, January 23, 2014.
“A car mounted the kerb near the junction of Park Avenue and Belgrave Road.
“The vehicle came to a stop next to a roadside flower display.
“The driver, a woman, was pronounced dead.
“The Isle of Wight Roads Policing Unit would like to thank members of the public who tried to save the woman’s life at the scene.
“Police are in the process of identifying and informing next-of-kin.
“No other vehicles were involved.
“No criminal offences were identified.
