World Aids Day: Spare A Thought For Those Who’ve Died

World Aids Day is now in its 23rd year. It’s a day to unite those fighting against HIV and to commemorate all those who have died of the disease.

Red RibbonAlthough the Isle of Wight has one of the lowest rates of HIV in England, being such a small community, it’s highly possible you may know someone who has died of the disease or is living with HIV.

Jim Edwards, Sexual Health-HIV Outreach Worker said, “Numbers of new diagnoses are not published for local areas, but we do know that in 2010 there were 39 Island residents who had been diagnosed with HIV – some receiving their care on the mainland and some receiving it here. Men who have sex with men remain the group most at risk.

Free HIV testing on the Island
If you’re concerned about the risks of HIV, the IW NHS is offering free HIV tests.

Jim went on to say, “Free confidential HIV tests are now available from participating pharmacies, from your GP surgery or from the Sexual Health Service at St Mary’s Hospital. Don’t delay – get tested – and remember, condoms will help protect you against all sexually transmitted infections including HIV. All pharmacies will be able to direct you to a member of this scheme if they don’t give the tests themselves.”

Spare a thought today for all those who have lost their lives to this horrendous disease.
