Under the Highways PFI scheme, the council had originally planned for the bridge to be operated remotely via the Island’s CCTV control room, however after listening to the views of local people and river users, it has decided to continue with the manual bridge operation arrangement.
The council and Island Roads, which under the highways PFI contract is responsible for the management and maintenance of the bridge, has consulted with a range of organisations, including Yarmouth Bridge Operating Board (YBOB) which include representatives from local town and parish councils, Yarmouth Harbour Commission, local sailing clubs and marine businesses, the emergency services and Wightlink.
Although remote operation of the Yar Bridge was a feasible option, having listened to river users and local groups the council has chosen not to change the existing bridge operation arrangements.
Councillor Jon Gilbey, Executive member for resources and highways PFI, said:
“We have listened to the views of local people and river users and feel it is the right decision to continue to manually operate the bridge. I would like to thank all those involved for sharing their views on this important issue which has resulted in a satisfactory outcome for all involved.”
