Two men on Beryl e-scooters

You can now report Isle of Wight e-scooter safety or parking concerns

Beryl, the UK’s leading micro-mobility provider, has partnered with Captur, a software platform built to help members of the public report any safety or parking concerns, as e-scooters launch in Sandown and Shanklin today.

The partnership will allow non-users of the scheme to report any safety or parking concerns about Beryl e-scooters directly to their Isle of Wight operational team.

Points for IW charity
To do so, people simply need to scan the QR code on any vehicle, take a photo, and submit. Each time a report is submitted, points will be earned towards a donation to the Sight for Wight charity

19 new bay locations in Shanklin and Sandown
The expansion of Beryl’s existing scheme will see an increase in the overall fleet of e-scooters across the Island of an additional 25 e-Scooters.

There are 19 new bay locations in Shanklin and Sandown, which are now live, and can be found in the Beryl app.

Partners consulted
These bays have been chosen in full consultation with Isle of Wight Council, Island Roads, Hampshire Constabulary, and Solent Transport.

As the UK’s only certified B Corp micromobility operator, Beryl continues to work with community groups across the Isle of Wight, to ensure the scheme works for everyone.

Ellis: 95 per cent of journeys end in a parking bay
Beryl CEO Philip Ellis said,

‘’As we expand our scheme on the Isle of Wight into Sandown and Shanklin today, we’re taking another step to ensure our e-scooters are convenient for riders, pedestrians and other road users.

‘’Due to our innovative geo-fenced and lined bays, 95 per cent of journeys end in one, and we want to improve that further through our partnership with Captur.

‘’Non-riders will be able to report any safety or parking concerns, simply by scanning a QR code on each vehicle, taking a photo, and submitting a report. Each report will also see points earned towards a donation to the Sight for Wight charity.’’

Bax: The Isle of Wight leads the way
Charlotte Bax, CEO and Founder, Captur said,

‘’Again the Isle of Wight leads the way. It’s clear members of the public want more convenient travel options, but they also really care about the impact on their local community and the environment. Now is the time to work together to make sure the e-scooters work for everyone and are here to stay!

‘’That’s why Captur has partnered with Beryl and will automatically donate to Sight for Wight each time a report is submitted from a member of the public.’’

So unless you have a ‘Smart’ phone that can read QR codes, take pictures etc you will have difficulty reporting any incidents. Also the users will not get reported to the Police for prosecution who have enough to do without chasing round after illegally used scooters.

Where do you send video of two people riding dangerously on one e scooter or the video of parents riding a scooter on a main road each with a small child strapped to their back ? What a really ridiculous system of reporting.

Take a clear scan of a scooter moving past at some speed. Sure, easy. [sarcasm] This does sound more like a sop to public opinion than actually doing anything to control dangerous riding. Improper parking may be annoying but it’s not as serious as riding two-aboard, weaving in and out of traffic or whizzing through pedestrian areas.

This may help, it’s a reply I received from Beryl. Beryl takes misuse of our vehicles very seriously. All our Beryl bikes and Beryl e-scooters are equipped with GPS technology that we can use to track our users’ journeys. In order to identify the scooter users, we kindly ask you to now report a misuse incident via our form. We can then track the scooters in our… Read more »

According to the Hampshire police webpages about using 101, it takes 5 minutes to complete the reporting form they require, and they promise to get back to you within 2 working days…

To azwills, this is the reply you get when trying to update the report with photo evidence obtained later from a Dash Cam.

Thank you for contacting Hampshire Constabulary. We will not actively be investigating the reported incident as previously advised so it will not be necessary to send an image of the scooter and riders.

What worries me is that the scooters do not have any mirrors to show traffic behind them. For a rider to look behind results in a wiggle which is dangerous. Do they have bells of hooters?
