The Isle of Wight Symphony Orchestra starts its new concert season on Saturday 19th November with a very popular programme.
The concert opens with the ever popular concert overture “Land of the Mountain and the Flood” by Hamish McCunn.
Hamish who you might say? When you hear the overture you will surely recognize it, especially those old enough to remember the 1970’s TV series “Sutherlands Law” as it was used as the theme music to that series.
After the overture, the orchestra will then be joined by the young violinist Eloisa-Fleur Thom for a performance of Dvorak’s lyrical violin concerto.
Rising star to perform
Eloisa-Fleur Thom, a dynamic young violinist, is increasingly in demand as both a soloist and chamber musician across the country. Eloisa-Fleur studied as an undergraduate at the Royal Academy of Music where she was awarded the Edwin Samuel Dove Prize and the Mary Burgess Prize for BMus Graduates Academic Achievement at graduation.
As you would expect with the music of Dvorak, the concerto is full of beautiful melodies often incorporating folk tunes from Dvorak’s native homeland.
The concert will conclude with a performance of the Symphony No.10 by Shostakovitch – an orchestral tour de force!
This symphony is full of beautiful melodies, humour and the excitement you would expect from this composer, with the full (very full) orchestra being used to its full glory.
Something for everyone
Whether you are a young musician learning an instrument or just a music lover of any age, there really is something for everyone in this entertaining programme, and it really is a concert not to be missed.
The performance starts at 7.30pm at the Medina Theatre.
Tickets are available form the theatre box office tel: 527020.
