Challenge & Adventure work with disadvantaged and challenging young people, including those from disability groups, using adventurous outdoor activities and tailored support to build their confidence, raise their self-esteem and help them to re-engage at school, at home and in the community.
The charity is based in Parkhurst Forest, an area of natural beauty on the Isle of Wight, (population 138,395), and has the use of an accessible 9 hectare field close to the town of Newport, (population 17,200), 1.2 miles from a Jewson site.
Support is sought to provide basic facilities to enable local and regional groups to offer affordable day/evening/overnight outdoor activities to benefit the people they work with in the community.
Funding/resources are required for Phase 1 of the project which will provide 10 wooden sleeping pods, toilet/washing facilities and an open sided seating area to accommodate 40 people.
The project will provide benefits for individual users, family groups, carers, local schools, local youth groups, local businesses and the wider community. The facilities will be available all year round to support day, evening and overnight activities for:
- Local/regional schools
- Young people NEET (16–23 years)
- Young people under 16 disengaged/at risk of disengaging from full-time school
- Learning disability support groups
- Local/regional and national youth groups
- Family group breaks
- Regional/national groups participating in the DofE scheme
- Businesses for team building and corporate events
- Community/charity fundraising
- Local/regional further education providers
- Responsibility for the management/upkeep of the site will rest with Challenge & Adventure.
The site design will ensure maintenance costs are kept to a minimum. Up to 10% of available days will be available to local/regional businesses for corporate events. Funds raised will cover maintenance costs/fund additional facilities to extend the range of site activities.
