Zero-rated Shanklin hotel under investigation following complaints about food poisoning (update 2)

The Isle of Wight council’s Environmental Health team are in the early stages of an investigation at a hotel in Shanklin, after receiving a number of complaints about food poisoning.

Update: The investigation has found no issues at the hotel – read the details here

More than a dozen visitors staying at the Langham Court Hotel in Shanklin over the bank holiday weekend, say that they came down with 24-hours of sickness/food poisoning following their stay.

The guests were visiting the Island for the annual Isle of Wight Scooter Rally, held at Sandown Airport (watch highlights).

IWC: Officers are in the early stages of an investigation
News OnTheWight got in touch with the Isle of Wight council to see whether they’d received any complaints about the hotel.

An Isle of Wight council spokesperson told News OnTheWight,

“Our Environmental Health team have received a number of complaints from people who stayed at the Langham Court Hotel in Shanklin over the bank holiday weekend.

“Our officers are in the early stages of an investigation.”

No word from the hotel
News OnTheWight also contacted the hotel earlier today (Thursday). In the evening Mrs Colson from the hotel told News OnTheWight,

“I am trying to contact others who stayed at the hotel during this time so far no one has had a problem.

“It seems strange no one contacted the hotel before contacting the press and radio. I will speak to environmental health in the morning.

“There were 80 guests at the hotel for the weekend and only this group have said they were taken ill.

“They had only breakfast at the hotel and ate out at various places during the day, also 14 of them went for a meal at the same restaurant, perhaps that could be the cause of the problem.

“We still have guests in who stayed at the weekend and have had no problems.”

Rated zero for hygiene
Last month the Langham Court Hotel was hit with a zero-star hygiene rating, which saw the kitchen shut, voluntarily, for a week.

Inspectors found multiple items past their use-by date, a poor standard of kitchen hygiene and temperature control issues.

At the time, the hotel said everything raised by the inspectors was corrected within eight days, including a thorough deep clean, and the hotel was deemed safe to open.
