Team behind Fixed Link campaign reveal their solution. You might be surprised

The two businessmen behind the Isle of Wight Fixed Link Referendum Facebook group, Carl Feeney and Kevin Price, have today launched their proposed plans for a Solent Tunnel.

The plans reveal a 20.9km tunnel with a road for two-way traffic, a monorail train line, a service lane, as well as room for telecommunication cables and utilities.

Plans for the Solent Tunnel

Referendum alongside General Elections
A Website presenting the plans suggest a Referendum on a fixed link could be tacked onto polling during the General Election in May 2015.

Those behind the plan say,

“We are hoping that with this plan or evolved plan, that a fair and democratic referendum will be held in conjunction with the May general election to decide whether Islanders want to be free from total ferry reliance, or if they feel the ferries are the way to continue with no alternative?”

Monorail through the tunnel and beyond
The proposed terminals would be in Arreton on the Isle of Wight and on greenfield land to the immediate West of Tichfield Abbey on the mainland.

Plans include the Monorail to continue beyond the tunnel on the Isle of Wight, linking Arreton to Newport, Cowes, Ryde, Brading, Sandown and stopping short at Shanklin (what about Ventnor?).

Costs and concerns
Potential income from the tunnel is outlined on the Website, with details of how much it might cost to use for domestic and freight transport.

Many of the concerns raised during the debate on Facebook have been addressed on the Website and those behind the plan invite readers to register and leave their feedback.

As long as they complainants are paying for it and not the rest of us, happy days. They should also, if they lose, pay full costs to IOWC for the diversion of precious resources needed to deal with other pressing Island matters. A proper JR will cost tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of pounds in materials, work hours and consultants fees. Probably equal to the cost… Read more »

For a moment, I thought you meant building on the marshes more?

Bembridge ‘the largest Parish population in UK’ is indeed very squashed, unless you are insulated through affluence.

Just saying, we seem to miss the point – we destroy a farm and its economic contribution, it’s jobs, etc rather than upset a few disproportionately privileged folk who soak up developable land to keep a luxury pet. It’s bonkers .

I think we can all work out why IWC is not concentrating on “developable” land in Bembridge.
For reasons not a million miles from the blocking of the Island Plan by the Tories, thus ensuring that we remain controlled for planning purposes from Tory Westminster.

8.7% of UK land is ‘Developed’ 0.2% is ‘Vacant’ & 91.1% is ‘Undeveloped’ (UK.Gov 2022) Since 1983, 2 Million Hectares – 7,722.043 Square miles of Public Land has been Sold Iff, 10% of UK surface & a 50% deprivation of our own assets. Interestingly, this Private Colonisation of tracts of land underfoot doesn’t just impact on housing crises, it is also being used to undermine Rights of… Read more »

John Metcalfe’s report defended every point of the 2021 decision. That decision has now been reconsidered, albeit with the same outcome and that process is no longer vulnerable to a possible JR. Any JR application now will have to be about how this latest decision was reached.

Exactly. Make sure the applicants pay our costs.

This lovely island is becoming a shambles. Ferry prices are destroying tourism & making travel impossible for residents. You can only build housing if you can afford endless appeals & judicial reviews (ie have to be a big developer who builds unaffordable homes)
