Men of Wight Longstone sunrise

See in May Day with the Magnificent Men of Wight Morris Dancers

Thanks to Mike for the reminder of this event taking place on May Day at the Mottistone Long Stone. Ed

The Men of Wight will be greeting the rising the sun at 5:30am at the Longstone on Sunday 1st May 2016.

As they have done for the past 35 years, the Magnificent Men of Wight Morris Dancers will perform a repertoire of Morris Dancing to welcome in the summer. They will also be raising a toast to the dawn of the summer with beer very kindly donated by Goddards Brewery (in fact some of their staff will also be up there to join them).

Meet at 5am
The public are welcome to come and join us, we meet at 5:00 am in Mottistone car park and walk up through the Bluebell carpeted woods in the dark to the Longstone. There is often get an audience of 60 plus people who come to watch the start of summer with the sunrise over the hill opposite.

The Longstone is the only standing stone on the Isle of Wight and is supposedly on a ley line.

The Men of Wight afterwards retire to the Wheatsheaf Yarmouth, where Shaun the Landlord provides a traditional English Breakfast for them.

Morris dance sides all over England will also be dancing at this time as part the culture and heritage of Morris dancing celebrating the start of summer and the passing of winter.
