Sally Halsey returns with Jessica Thayer for fundraising recital

Helen shares details of this upcoming charity event. Ed

Sally Halsey, pianist, originally from Bonchurch, is returning to the Island next weekend to give a recital at St. Catherine’s Church, Ventnor. She is bringing her friend Jessica Thayer, a wonderful young soprano, to join her in the Sunday afternoon recital, 22nd May at 3pm, and proceeds will be donated to Cardiac Risk in the Young.

Songs, arias and solo piano works
Jessica and Sally, who are both about to graduate from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London, will perform an enchanting programme mixing songs, arias and solo piano works.

It promises to feel like a feast of music with repertoire from such composers as Purcell, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Gluck, Mahler and Chausson. In the interval tea and cakes will be served!

Close friends and colleagues
Sally and Jessica met in their first year at Trinity and have been working together ever since. They have performed numerous times as a duo, and were also involved with leading student led opera performances, as music director and director respectively.

One of the most memorable was taking Bizet’s Carmen – a three hour opera – and performing the story in 50 minutes, taking the most famous tunes and following the main plot through, directing a cast of other undergraduate coursemates to create a fully staged performance.

They are firm friends and look forward to continuing to work together as they launch their professional careers.

Fundraising for CRY
Sally and Jessica both know people affected by young cardiac deaths, and of course there have been several high profile cases in the elite sporting community recently, so they want to support the charity, Cardiac Deaths in the Young (CRY).

CRY’s vision is “Preventing young sudden cardiac deaths through awareness, screening and research, and supporting affected families”

Free testing in Newport
CRY’s pioneering screening programme now tests around 23,000 young people (aged 14-35) every year. Around one in every 300 people tested by CRY will be diagnosed with a potentially fatal (and more than likely, treatable) heart defect.

A free heart test is being offered to 14-35 year olds by CRY on 13th July at the Island Innovation Campus, Newport. For further information about CRY, or to book a test, visit the Website.
