At the beginning of the week, several readers got in touch with OnTheWight pointing us to a report by the BBC about the world’s oldest cured ham.
You might wonder what this has to do with the Isle of Wight, but looking further into the story, the connection comes not only in the fact that what’s thought to be the world’s oldest edible ham can be found in the museum of our namesake in the US, Isle of Wight County, but also that the outline shape of the leg of ham looks remarkably like our little Island.
Island shaped ham
Sure, it’s not exactly the same contour as the Isle of Wight, but it’s pretty close and certainly if you compared with an aerial photo, we reckon you’d find it was very similar (like this one below by Tracy McKinlay).
Many would agree that living on an Island, where we’re all pretty aware of the outline shape, means we often find shapes that match, crisps, potholes and homemade pizzas come to mind.
We’ve love to hear of the weirdest thing you found shaped like the Isle of Wight
Thanks to all the readers who got in touch about the ham.
