12-year-old girl rescued from waist-deep mud in the River Medina

A 12-year-old girl stuck fast in mud in the River Medina lead to several emergency services rushing to her aid on Monday evening.

Cowes RNLI lifeboat was among those tasked to assist, launching at 5.15pm.

Emergency services scrambled
Also racing to the scene, between Island Harbour and the Folly, were Bembridge and Ventnor coastguards and the Island Fire Brigade.

The girl had been waist-deep in the off-shore mud for over an hour, and was getting increasingly cold.

Specialist inflatable equipment used
She was eventually rescued by firemen using specialist inflatable equipment. An ambulance then took her to St Mary’s Hospital for a thorough check-up.

Although the lifeboat was not directly involved in the actual rescue, the crew provided useful radio communication between on-shore coastguards and Solent Coastguard headquarters at Fareham. It returned to station at 6.15pm.
