The 2009 league tables for England secondary schools just published show the Island lying at 138 out of 150 local authorities for the percentage of pupils gaining five or more A*-C grade GCSEs including English and Maths (41.6% for the Isle of Wight compared to 50.7% for England). Last year it was 123rd.
The BBC Website has a table showing how different areas performed.
Among the five Island high schools only Carisbrooke High exceeded the national average, with 51% of pupils achieving 5+ A*-C including English and Maths.
GCSE results for pupils achieving 5+ A*-C including E&M:
Ryde School with Upper Chine (IND) 93%
Carisbrooke High School 51%
[England average for all schools 49.8%]
Cowes High School 44%
[Local authority average 41.6%]
Ryde High School 39%
Medina High School 38%
Sandown High School 38%
They all achieved above the government’s “floor” target of 30%.

On the Island 46.4% of pupils gained A*-C in at least two sciences, compared to 53.7% across the whole of England; and 17.4% achieved A*-C in a modern language, compared to 31.6% across England.
